Week 4 Project Planning: Compare/Contrast Voltaire & Tartuffe

The two stories that I am going to compare and contrast are Voltaire and Tartuffe.  While these stories are very different, I believe they share some common literary elements as well as have some that a drastically different.  The reason I picked these two stories was because these were the two stories that I would like to learn more about. I read them during the assigned reading but I didn’t feel that I understood them as well as I should have.  I would like to compare the settings of the story, both physical and chronological, the two types of conflict-internal and external conflict, symbolism that is used throughout each story and the central theme of each story.

Basic Outline-

Conflict

-Themes within Tartuffe
--Similar themes?

  1. Hi Patrick, it is great how you want to learn more about Voltaire's Candide and Moliere's Tartuffe, both are very good stories. They do have some very common themes for example love which you could address, as well as the plot lines. Your outline is good since you describe what each paragraph is going to talk about, and it looks like you will be addressing several concepts that occur within the story. I am curious on the subject of symbolism within both stories, what do you have in mind? It is a very good point that you are going to give a brief summary of both novels because it helps the reader understand what is going on. I liked how you divided your project into sections as well as mini sections in order to be more thorough and explore the stories in various perspectives like the setting. Comparing and contrasting is definitely a great way to understand the reading a little better since you having to analyze them more thoroughly. I have not thought about the internal and or external conflicts and it would be amazing to read about that. I am looking forward to your project and see how you incorporated everything together. You did a very good job on your outline.

  2. Hey Patrick. Your outline does a good job of showing you've planned out the structure for how you'll tackle your project. I also think it's great that you'll be addressing both when and where the stories take place. I would have liked to know what themes you had in mind, even if the ideas were vague and not fully thought out yet when writing this. Addressing symbolism is seems like it will give you a lot to talk about in your project, which is good. I wonder how much more your project can accomplish if you were to address the backgrounds of both authors and the times they both lived in.
